Coyote Update
A Rye police officer fired two shots at a coyote in Rye Nature Center early Friday evening, but no coyotes were found or killed.
Police said they also received several reports of coyote sightings from residents over the long holiday weekend, especially during the early evening hours, but were unable to locate the animals. Special coyote units continued to search over the weekend, and are especially focusing on Apawamis Club, Rye Golf Club, Greenwood Union Cemetery, Rye Nature Center and the Marshlands Conservancy.
Two young girls were recently attacked by coyotes in four days, prompting police to urge parents to keep their children inside. A 3-year-old girl was attacked behind her North Street home on June 29. A 6-year-old girl was attacked by two coyotes in front of her LaSalle Avenue home on June 25. Both girls are expected to recover from bite wounds.
