story by the Junior League of Westchester on the Sound

spent a recent day decorating, creating holiday crafts and sharing refreshments with three local organizations who provide services to the hungry, battered women and the elderly.

Residents of Hope Community Services of New Rochelle, a food bank and soup kitchen, Providence House, a battered women’s shelter in New Rochelle, and Sarah Neuman, a retirement home in Mamaroneck, all received good cheer from JLWOS elves.

“Taking the time to care about bringing good will to those a little less fortunate is at the heart of our mission of improving Sound Shore communities through volunteerism,” commented Jennie McFarland, president, JLWOS.  “We are thankful to the organizations who participated for allowing us to share in their holiday and spend time with their residents.”

Carole Traum from Hope Community Services was “thankful to receive 30 hats, gloves and scarves that JLWOS donated for those who come to their soup kitchen and are in need of these items.”

At Providence House, JLWOS was fortunate enough to be part of one participant receiving and decorating their very first Christmas stocking.

“We are thrilled to have the house looking like Christmas,” commented Sylvia Samilton-Baker of Providence House.  “You cannot imagine how grateful we are, especially since we are so time limited.  We are so very grateful to you and the Junior League for getting the house decorated.”

Local community merchants were extremely generous in donating towards this event, and, without their support, the day would not have been possible.  Donations were received from both Stop & Shops in New Rochelle, Target in White Plains, Michael’s in Pelham, Home Depot in New Rochelle and Port Chester and the Larchmont Nursery.  JLWOS members also donated their own items to make the day extra-special.
