PRE-GREEN WEEK PROGRAMS

MONDAY, APRIL 19, 2010

The Great Airplane Contest. Create your own paper airplanes by recycling your unwanted paper and then come soar it at Larchmont Public Library. Prizes given for participation in several age categories and for the longest flight. TUESDAY APRIL 20, 2010

Earth Day Decoupage.  Raid your recycling bins and bring leftover glass and plastic containers to Larchmont Public Library. We will use old magazines to turn them into useful works of art. Please register by calling 834-2281.3:30 – 4:30 p.m.

THIS YEAR, GREEN WEEK, APRIL 22-30, IS DEDICATED TO "SUSTAINABILITY."  Attend the Sustainability EXPO at The Hommocks Middle School on April 24th; participate in a program sponsored by the Junior League of Westchester on the Sound or Sheldrake Environmental Center; attend a wine tasting and artist’s presentation or learn flower arranging; support our local merchants who support GREEN WEEK, or walk with family & friends at one of our beautiful local parks. Your involvement will help to sustain our community and enable you to enjoy the best our local shoreline Town and Villages have to offer. Please don’t miss the opportunity throughout GREEN WEEK to sustain neighbors in need in our community-DONATE NON-PERISHABLE FOOD ITEMS & REUSABLE BAGS AT PARTICIPATIONG STORES (see below). Decorate with Flair and a Happy Conscience. During GREEN WEEK learn about and bring home a variety of sustainable and recycled products from FIELD, 2095 Boston Post Road, Larchmont and beautiful recycled paper and green products from REcologie,. REcologie welcomes young artists, ages 8-10, to sell their creations at the store.1969A Palmer Avenue, Larchmont.

LARCHMONT-MAMARONECK SUSTAINABILITY EXPO. Tri-Municipal event sponsored by the Village of Larchmont and the Town and Village of Mamaroneck Environmental Committees. Learn how to go greener at this one day event at The Hommocks Middle School. Showcasing educational workshops and speakers as well as dozens of green vendors and community outreach resources designed to provide practical advice on how to live a more sustainable, healthy life. Our Not So Garden at Ward Acres. Learn about sustainable gardening-using rain water and no pesticides-at the Junior League of Westchester on the Sound’s garden plot located at Ward Acres Community Garden. The League grows vegetables for donation to a local soup kitchen. Local children and other residents plant seeds and steward the 40+ plots of land; one free sapling given to each participant. Andersons Books Brings you Miss Paulene to Celebrate Earth Day with Interactive Story Time for Children, ages 3-6. During GREEN WEEK, donate food at Anderson’s for the Food Pantry and discover featured books on nature & the environment, 96 Chatsworth Avenue, Larchmont. 11:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m.

 

Golden Shoe String & Furniture Sharehouse. Where do gently used chairs and clothes go? Not to the landfill, thanks to the Golden Shoe String and Furniture Sharehouse. These non-profits serve families in the Sound Shore area by recycling and repurposing gently used clothing and furniture. FRIDAY, APRIL 30, ARBOR DAY

Larchmont’s Annual BARK for the PARK.   Arbor Day Celebration highlighted with tree planting festivities where children will have the chance to shovel dirt, water newly planted trees and learn about nature and the trees that make Larchmont special! Mud boots and shovels suggested for all participating children; Constitution Park, Larchmont, 3:00-4:30 p.m.

 

DURING GREEN WEEK, VISIT LARCHMONT PUBLIC LIBRARY AND MAMARONECK PUBLIC LIBRARY: Take out books on green technology, sustainable development and related environmental topics to educate, inspire and enjoy. Save a Tree: Borrow books.  Cut down on plastic:  Rent a DVD or CD.  Sign up for a library card.  Read the daily newspapers and magazines.  Save electricity:  Computer and Internet use available for all ages. THEY WELCOME YOU!

 

During GREEN WEEK improve the environment by supporting our local merchants. Leave the car at home and walk to the store.
