Marine Safety Inspections

If you’ve ever had that sinking suspicion that the safety equipment on your boat isn’t quite up to snuff,

 

 

 

 

 

Saturday is the time to find out.

 

The Village of Mamaroneck Marine Unit along with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will be conducting free boat safety inspections both on the water and at the boat ramp at Harbor Island Park from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

 

Senior Bay Constable Craig Romanek said boaters can just flag down a police boat if they see it on the Sound or stop by the ramp The inspections will take about 15-20 minutes, he said. If any violations are found, boaters will not be issued a ticket, only a warning. If boats pass the inspection, they will be given a sticker. Boaters can also call Channel 6 on the marine radio and set a meeting spot for an inspection.

 

Romanek said the inspection will include everything from checking for fire extinguishers and flares and life jackets to testing all the boat’s equipment and ensuring the proper anchor is on board.

 

"We want people to have the right equipment so they don’t get into trouble out there," Romanek said. "Safety is the No. 1 goal."
