ROBERT L. CONKLING, 92, died at home on Wednesday, December 22, 2010,
in Larchmont, NY. The cause of death was prostate cancer. He was
married for 53 years to Sylvia Hoban Alexander Conkling, his true
love, who died in 2000. Bob and Sally met by chance one stormy night
on a night train from Pennsylvania Station to Philadelphia during WWII
(a story he loved to tell) and were married in East Hampton, NY in
‘47. They established their home in Larchmont, NY, in ‘54 where they
raised their six children. Bob graduated from Manhattan College in
‘39, was a member of the men’s track team, became it’s captain, and
was inducted into the Manhattan College Hall of Fame in ‘91. Bob
served as executive officer in the United States Navy from ‘42-‘46
aboard the U.S.S. Tattnall and the U.S.S. Amick. He participated in
the Invasion of Southern France, was awarded numerous decorations,
including two bronze stars. He graduated from Fordham Law School in
‘49 and was admitted to the New York State Bar in ‘50. Bob spent his
entire career at the Manhattan law firm of Bleakley, Platt, et al.,
rising to managing partner. He was a member of the Association of the
Bar of the City of New York; National Association of Railroad Trial
Counsel (President, ‘76-‘77); past president of the Larchmont Babe
Ruth League and the University Club of Larchmont. Bob is survived and
deeply missed by his family: Robert, Jr., Peter (Nancy), Christopher
(Ms. Simon McQueen), John, Jamie (Lillibeth), and Elise Galgano (Al)
and his four grandchildren: John Granata, James Granata, Heather
Conkling, Peter Conkling and one great grand-daughter: Jessica

After beginning her legal career as an Assistant District
Attorney in Bronx County, Karen was, for more than 30 years, a highly
respected and beloved attorney in Westchester County, New York. In
addition to her practice as a real estate attorney, she was intimately
involved in the areas of law which most affected women and children.
She served as a law guardian for more than 25 years and was
instrumental in the establishment of the Moderate Means Panel at the
Pace Women’s Justice Center to ensure representation of low and middle
income persons in matrimonial proceedings.
In 2004, she was the first recipient of the New York State Bar Association’s Moderate Means
Award, and she served as a mentor, educator and advisor for that panel
since its inception. Karen’s skill and commitment have been an
inspiration to her colleagues in collaborative divorce. She served
with distinction as President of the Westchester Women’s Bar
Association, as a member of the Board of Directors of the Women’s Bar
Association of the State of New York which bestowed upon her the
Marilyn Menge Distinguished Service Award, and most recently as a
Director of the Westchester Women’s Bar Association Foundation. Her
standing in the profession was reflected in her appointment to the
Committee on Character and Fitness for the Ninth Judicial District.

Claire S. Nesdale, a Larchmont resident for more than 50 years, died in her sleep on Monday following a brief illness. She was 93 years old. She had lived in Darien for the past two years. Visiting hours will take place on Thursday, Dec. 9 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, and 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Fox Funeral Home in Larchmont. A Mass will be celebrated at St. Augustine Church in Larchmont at 10:00 AM on Friday, Dec. 10.
Mrs. Nesdale was a social worker at the New York Foundling Hospital for many years. A 1938 graduate of the College of Mt. St. Vincent, she earned a Masters of Social Work degree from Fordham University in 1971.
A communicant of St. Augustine R.C. Church, Mrs. Nesdale said her religious belief gave her “deep faith and amazing grace.” She raised her children with unconditional love and infinite patience, and is remembered by them with love and gratitude.
Her husband, Francis P. Nesdale, a teacher, died in 1995. She is survived by four children: a daughter, Linda C. Nesdale of Darien, CT, and three sons, John S. Nesdale of Larchmont, NY, Kenneth S. Nesdale of New York City, and Richard S. Nesdale, of Encinitas, CA. She had two grandchildren, Lea Nesdale of Larchmont and Shane Nesdale of Stamford CT. Her survivors include two sisters, Doris S. Ardith Campbell Dentzer, a resident of Alexandria, Va., died of lung cancer at theLarchmont home of her parents on Nov. 30. A former Larchmont resident, she was52.
Diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in late2009, Ms. Dentzer emphasized the dangers of smoking to others as she underwenttreatment for her illness, often stopping smokers on the street to describe herillness and its effects. She received care primarily at Georgetown MedicalCenter and Stamford Hospital, with concluding home care provided by CalvaryHospice of the Bronx.
Throughout her life, she was known for thedeep attention and concern she gave to friends and family, as well as tofavorite causes and organizations. The latter included women’s rights in theworkplace and the P.E.O. Sisterhood, an international women’s philanthropic andeducational organization. She was a member of its Chapter AF in the Washington,DC area.
A daughter of William and Celia Dentzer, shewas born Aug. 18, 1958 in Arlington, Va. Moving to Larchmont with her family in 1969, she attended local schoolsand graduated from Mamaroneck High School in 1976. She received a B.A. from theUniversity of Vermont in 1980 and earned an M.B.A. in 1987 from the AmericanGraduate School of International Management (Thunderbird) in Glendale, Ariz.
Ms. Dentzer worked over the years in retailstore management and finance-related posts in New York City and Boca Raton,Fla. After relocating to Alexandria in1998, she served as president of the Hunting Towers & Terrace Tenants’ Associationduring the construction of the new Woodrow Wilson Bridge across the PotomacRiver, which entailed destruction of one of its apartment buildings and newlease arrangements for all tenants.
Surviving in addition to her parents are twobrothers, James (wife, Holly) ofAshburn, Va. and William III of New York City; two sisters, Susan (husband,Charles Alston) of Chevy Chase, Md. and Emily (husband, Scott Rodi) of Lyme,N.H.; four nephews, William and Samuel Alston, James Jr. and Peter Dentzer;four nieces, Caroline, Elizabeth and Alice Rodi and Grace Alston; and severalaunts, uncles and cousins. Her 1988 marriage ended in divorce.

Scott Pulik of Larchmont and formerly Brooklyn, N.Y., passed away unexpectedly onNovember 27, 2010 at age 35. Scott graduated from Blind Brook High Schoolin Rye Brook, N.Y. in 1993 where he was on the Varsity Ski Team. A 1997 graduate of Ithaca College (NY) hereceived a B.F.A. in Film and Photography as well as Ithaca’s Film Departmentsenior award for film editing. He alsoplayed guitar in a local college rock band. In addition to skiing, snowboarding and music, Scott was a literaturebuff and enjoyed playing pool. He tookgreat pride in his second career in carpentry.
