Rumorville: Pizza in, Heroes to leave

These hardy peeps were cooking up pizzas on Palmer Avenue Tuesday night…and creating pizzas to order for you to bring home and bake,

because that’s the business model for the Homemade Pizza Co ., and what you will find at the new store in Larchmont. The Chicago-based chain also recently opened a store in Rye. That’s founder and CEO Eric Fosse holding the basil pie. Tuesday night they gave away a reported 250 of them.

We asked Regional Manager Matthew Nicholson why they chose to expand into New York with Larchmont and Rye.

"Many people here," says Nicholson, "lead active healthy lives. We were looking for places where people like fresh food, and activities like yoga. That’s who we appeal to. We also value family…and like that this is close to the train!"

Said resident Debra Quintana, "There was a long line of people waiting in the bitter cold.  The founders of the Chicago chain were standing outside cooking up pizza and giving free samples.  They also came out with hot cider.  It was really cold out there."

Must be the Lake Effect.

Sadly, we report that Local Heroes, the deli and sandwich shop at  2116 Boston Post Road (near Larchmont Avenue) will close at the end of the month. Owner Brian Reznitsky is selling the fixtures to the first buyer and hopes it will live on as a deli. He has had it ten years; it has been at that location for about 30 years. Brian will be joining an exterminating firm in Mamaroneck.

"Much better hours," he says. Good luck, Brian!

  1. I tried the free BBQ chicken pizza. Easy to make, good instructions, The ingrediants were fresh (sauce and the chicken) and tasty, but one of my favortes the crust didnt come out the same as a pizzeria. Bottom line, if you buy frozen this is for you, but for me, Im sticking to the pizzerias and cooked pizzza. Wish them luck though as the owners there and the entire staff could not be nicer.

  2. there were two of us so we each got a pizza and a salad (easy and FREE family dinner!) the kids had the BLT pizza-the loved it -and the crust came out great!–we also had the wild mushroom–delicious–crust great again–mikemhs–did you preheat the oven enough?
i think it was really great of them to offer this up–and we will certainly be back (and i still cannot feel my toes- and i got home an hour ago!-i cannot imagine how those pizza folks standing outside are surviving …..

  3. Brian has been a good part of the community for all these years. He will be missed by all of us regulars for the past 10 years.

  4. My family all loved the pizza.
The 4 cheese was delicious as well as the spinach and BBQ. I loved the healthier crust. For my family it is perfect, it only take 10 minutes to cook; it is nice and hot when it comes out of your own oven. Often, when I bring pizza home it is not as hot and does not taste as fresh. Everyone should definitely give it a try!!!

  5. Sorry to have missed the event and of course best of luck to the new purveyors and neighbors.

Now regarding the Pizza, can anyone compare it to the Kirkland Artisanal ready to bake thin crust pizza in the refrigerator section at Costco? Only three Kirkland varieties: Cheese, Pepperoni, and Margherita with Tomato, Mozzarella, and Basil but only $6.99 for 16″.

  6. MikeMHS is spot on. Good ingredients, but … I’ve tried three separate times (each time pre-heating the oven as per instructions) … bottom line is that most home ovens don’t have the BTU’s required for pizzeria quality pizza, not to mention clay oven goodness. Good luck to them, but I am not sure I see a niche between pizzeria pizza and good frozen pizza.

  7. I tried the four cheeses and it was definitely yummy! I am not so sure how the concept will catch on, but I wish them luck!

  8. Bravo Homemade Pizza – you kept your promises! Giving free samples is a great idea. And you kept your word – unlike another pizza shop in Mamaroneck that covered the area with Free Pizza postcards, but when people tried to cash them in, nothing – a big zero. Homemade Pizza is off to a good start.
