tried to take his firearm after refusing to leave the club after it had closed for the night.

Frederick M. Schmitz, 22, of Lake Forest, Ill., was charged with second-degree assault, a Class D felony, obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, both misdemeanors, and disorderly conduct, a violation, at about 1:20 a.m.

Police officer Franco Compagnone suffered undisclosed injuries. It is unclear how long he will be out of work.

According to police reports, Compagnone called for a taxi to take Schmitz home, and asked the club’s staff to move away from the man, who was growing more and more agitated.

After using obscenities toward Compagnone, Schmitz allegedly reached for Compagnone’s firearm and told police that they and  the club would regret the way they were treating him.

When Compagnone  grabbed Schmitz’s arm to prevent him from taking his gun, Schmitz allegedly said, "It’s on," and started throwing punches.

According to reports, Compagnone was struck several times in the chest and arm and once in the face. He was being treated for undisclosed injuries to his left knee, left arm, chin and right hand.
