Storm: “We dodged a bullet”

Despite a wet and messy Friday morning commute, and a few power outages and downed trees, The Loop area came out relatively unscathed from overnight downpours – and it’s only supposed to get better, with a cool but sunny weekend ahead.

 

 

 

 

 

 

   

 

“Hopefully, we’ve dodged a bullet on this,” said Mamaroneck Village Manager Richard Slingerland, who spent part of this week bracing for the storm by shoring up flood control systems.

 

“We have no flooding to report,” he said.  “The rivers are below the top by a foot or two and we have plenty of capacity with both dams.”

 

That doesn’t mean, however, that the storm left no problems in its wake.

 

Downed trees and power lines made the Friday morning rush an even bigger mess than usual in some well-traveled spots. Weaver Street, for example, was closed in both directions between Palmer and Howell avenues, police said.

 

A downed tree also closed the intersection of Halstead Avenue and Jefferson Street near the Mamaroneck train station, they said.

 

Though Larchmont and Mamaroneck reported minimal power outages, our neighbors were not quite as lucky.  On Friday morning, about 1,000 customers near the New Rochelle and Pelham border were still lights-free, as were about 300 in Scarsdale and Harrison.

 

If weather forecasts ring true, though, that should be the worst of it, at least through the weekend.

 

The National Weather Service is calling for rain to start abating by noon Friday, making way for sunshine both Saturday and Sunday with highs in the mid 60s.
