The Hot Dog Known ‘Round the World
Walter’s Hot Dog Stand in Mamaroneck, celebrating 90 years of those unmistakable sliced-in-half-and fried (or is it griddled?)hot dogs
(with a side of curly fries) may soon be a National and a State Historic Landmark; it is already a County landmark. The nomination (which you can read below–with some fascinating history– says, "In addition to the noteriety of its hot dogs, Walter’s Hot Dog Stand is an amazing example of roadside architecture."
For 90 years locals travelling the world have sent postcards back to Walter’s from every corner of the globe. It is managed by Peter and Jeanne Fellows, who lecture, write and teach about about psychic arts.
The New York Board for Historic Preservation said today it will recommend that Walter’s be entered into the Registries. Here is the official nomination document. (definitely worth reading.)
What a great article! I went to MHS and grew up in Mamaroneck….Walter’s will always be my favorite.
When I was young, my friends and I would ride out bikes to get to Walter’s. I would bring my own ketchup because at the time I did not like mustard. Now, even though I live in California, I have jars of mustard sent to me, I visit Walter’s every time I go to Mamaroneck and can eat four with extra mustard. I am now almost 60 and would like nothing better than Walter’s for my birthday lunch.
I’m Leslee’s sister and I love Walter’s more because I eat 7 every time I go! I live in Miami and whenever we go to N.Y. I bring back 50 hot dogs and we have a Walter’s party here. My best friend who still lives in the area brought Walter’s hot dogs to all three of my children’s weddings. At our 40th high school reunion we all went to Walter’s and the best yet…my kids threw me a surprise 60th birthday party at Walter’s. Can’t wait to get to N.Y. soon
I am the best friend od Leslee’s sister and the one who carried all 50 hotdogs to each of the weddings. Walters is my favorite restuarant inthe world. I wouldn’t wait 20 minutes to eat in any resturant- there is always another. but i think nothing of 40 minutes on line at Walters since there is no other better.
